A PRIMEIRA DÉCADA DA ÁSIA, DE JOÃO DE BARROS: EDIÇÃO E ESTUDO LEXICOGRÁFICO-ETIMOLÓGICO

Abstract

The first decade of Asia (1552), by João de Barros, is a historiographical chronicle that deals with Portuguese colonization in Africa and Asia, during the 15th and 16th centuries, a relevant moment for Portugal, which was the first to reach the sea route. to India. Considering the ten books that make up this precious historical document, in this thesis, a diplomatic edition and a loan glossary were carried out, whose etymological bases were not related to Latin or Romance languages. The research, developed under the theoretical and methodological support of historical linguistics stricto sensu, of philology and historical-variational lexicography, contributes to the establishment of a text of great importance for historical and linguistic studies, as well as for the systematic knowledge of a lexical inventory unusual, featuring elements of Arabic, Malay, Tamil, Berber, Javanese, Persian, Kimbundu, Hebrew, Hindustani, Czech and Sanskrit. It serves the research for the continuous work of reconstituting the historical and linguistic scenario of the Portuguese language and the effects of its cultural and linguistic contacts. Because it is the moment of publication of the original work of the temporal borders bordering the end of archaic Portuguese, this thesis also seeks to contribute to the consolidation of research related to this moment in which modern Portuguese begins to consolidate and spread. by the New World.
