Teoria quântica de campos pelas trilhas da eletrodinâmica quântica no Brasil, 1948-1980: as contribuições dos físicos J. Leite Lopes, T. Maris e J. A. Swieca

Abstract

Este trabalho objetiva construir capítulos sobre a Teoria Quântica de Campos (TQC) pelas trilhas da Eletrodinâmica Quântica (EDQ) no Brasil, no período de 1948 a 1980, mediante o estudo das contribuições dos físicos J. Leite Lopes, T. Maris e J. A. Swieca. A tese parte da análise das pesquisas científicas universitárias realizadas por esses físicos, com base na EDQ (renormalizada, a partir de 1948), que deram suporte à física e às ciências correlatas. Destacando os contextos científico, social, econômico e político; é feito um esboço biográfico dos físicos protagonistas citados, localizando-os nesses contextos em que eles atuaram. O foco da narrativa está concentrado na evolução das pesquisas em TQC direcionadas para a prática e o desenvolvimento da EDQ no Brasil, e as consequentes pesquisas que foram norteadas por essa EDQ, principalmente quando do propósito de aplicá-la, também, a outra interação fundamental de partículas, que não a eletromagnética, tal como para a interação fraca. Para tal, o Brasil contou, já no início da década de 1950, com o suporte intelectual e presencial de um dos criadores da EDQ, o físico R. P. Feynman, que por várias vezes visitou as nossas instituições de ensino e pesquisa, a exemplo do CBPF e do ITA. Posteriormente, segue-se com as análises de motivações, convites e efetivas contribuições inerentes aos físicos protagonistas, culminando, portanto, com um significativo entendimento da formação, em seus primeiros e próximos passos, dos grupos de pesquisa no CBPF, USP, UFRGS, PUC e UFSCar direcionados para o desenvolvimento da TQC pelo formalismo conceitual da EDQ, com ênfase nos conteúdos de simetria e quebra espontânea de simetria, que efetivamente teve uma contribuição brasileira em solo pátrio ou estrangeiro, seja realizado por físicos brasileiros natos ou não, ou por físico estrangeiro, atuando em universidade brasileira.

ABSTRACT This work aims to construct chapters of Quantum Field Theory (QFT) in Brazil, through the tracks of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), from 1948 to 1980, involving the contributions of physicists J. Leite Lopes, T. Maris, and J. A. Swieca. The thesis starts with the analysis of the scientific researches carried out by these physicists, based on renormalized QED, which gave support to physics and related sciences. By highlighting the scientific, social, economic, and political contexts, biographical sketches of the aforementioned physicists are made, locating them in these contexts in which they acted. The narrative is focused on the evolution of QFT research, aiming at the practice and development of QED in Brazil, and the ensuing researches which were guided by this QED, especially when applied to fundamental interaction of particles other than the electromagnetic, as the weak interaction. To this end, Brazil had in the beginning of the 1950’s the intellectual and presential support of one of the creators of renormalized QED, R. P. Feynman, who visited Brazilian research institutions several times, such as CBPF and ITA. Next, the motivations, invitations and effective contributions of the three protagonists are analyzed, culminating with a significant understanding of the formation, in its first and next steps, of the research centers at CBPF, USP, UFRGS, PUC and UFSCar, aimed at the development of TQC by the conceptual formalism of EDQ, with emphasis on the contents of symmetry and spontaneous symmetry breaking, which effectively had a Brazilian contribution in the country or abroad, whether performed by Brazilian physicists born or not in the country, or by a foreign physicist acting at a Brazilian university.
