Abstract:
This thesis presents, in two volumes, a philological analysis of documents of Livro I do
Tombo of Benedictine Monastery of Bahia through a conservative edition and a digital
edition. The first section introduces Philology, contextualizing its role in contemporary
society. Next, there is an explanation on Philology and notarial documents, establishing, thus,
the relationship between the study object and the elements that compose the textual
surroundings. At this time, it is introduced the scenario where Livro I do Tombo is located, the
Library and the Archive of the Benedictine Monastery of Bahia. The presentation of Livro I
do Tombo follows this, with a detailed extrinsic description through which was drawn a
historical profile for the mixture of technique and art a manuscript book is, as well as how
does it appear in the history of humanity. The intrinsic description of the manuscript is also
shown. A description of the methodology applied to the development of the Catalogue, the
onomastic and the chronological indexes is offered to the reader as well as the main historical
characters from families enrolled in the document are described, by developping their family
trees. Further considerations on culture and memory from this Livro is presented through the
analysis of the rites of land tenure which occur in the manuscript (one has literary focus and
the another connected to the Middle Ages memory) and liturgical rites of death (with analysis
of two wills ). The previous editions of Livro I are introduced, containing: a reflection on the
Textual Criticism; about Conservative Edition of documents with the criteria adopted for it
and major difficulties in transcription; about digital editing and its methodology. Then they
are brought in the catalog, the whole onomastic and chronological indexes, the list of
documents transcribed and final considerations. The digital edition is presented in the second
volume of this thesis (DVD) with all texts produced in this thesis, descriptions, analyzes,
facsimiles etc., linked through hyperlinks.
