Adoradores de Dionísio: uso e restrições ao consumo do álcool na Bahia (1870-1930)

Abstract

Esta dissertação versa sobre as teses oriundas da Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia (FAMEB), cujo tema abordava o uso do álcool, seus efeitos no organismo, bem como a institucionalização do alcoolismo como uma doença social, considerado pelos doutores em medicina como um problema de saúde pública em Salvador, mas que estaria ameaçando todo um futuro da civilização brasileira, entre o final do século XIX e início do século XX. O autor faz uma análise das ideias que nortearam a prática da medicina no Ocidente por acreditar que estas estariam influenciando as práticas médicas defendidas nas teses desde a questão miasmática estabelecida por Hipócrates, considerado o pai da Medicina, até a ideia da degenerescência física e mental defendida no final do século XIX, que estaria influenciando os trabalhos acadêmicos da Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia nas primeiras décadas do século XX.

This dissertation focuses on the theses from the Faculty of Medice of Bahia (FAMEB), which dealt which the use of alcohol, its effects in the body, as well the institutionalization of alcoholism as a social disease, considered by doctors in medicine as a public health problem that affected the first capital of Brazil, Salvador, but that would be theareatening a whole future of Brazilian civilization between the late 19th century and early 20th century. The author makes analysis of the ideas that guied the practice of medicine in the West to believe that these ideas would be influencing the medical practices defended in theses ranging from miasmtic issue established by Hippocrates considered the father of Medicine, until the idea of mental and physical degeneration defended by Benedict Morel at the end of the 19 th century and still be influencing the scholary works of FAMEB in the early decades of the 20th century.
