Manoel Ignácio de Mendonça Filho e a pintura de marinha na Bahia

Abstract

Nesta pesquisa, propõe-se a estudar sistematicamente a obra artística de Manoel Ignácio de Mendonça Filho, detendo-se na pintura de paisagem marinha e o seu entendimento através da formação do pintor e de sua interação com os interesses da época, assim como sua atuação na diretoria da Escola de Belas Artes da Bahia e suas consequências para a renovação do ensino da arte nesta instituição. Nesse sentido, analisa-se, formal e historicamente, a pintura de marinha de Mendonça Filho, bem como se observa a gestão desse artista na direção da EBA, enfatizando sua política de valorização e melhoria do ensino das Artes. Adotam-se os métodos histórico, comparativo, dedutivo e o regressivo de Bloch, retornando até o século XVII, em que a pintura de marinha aparece desvinculada, como motivo independente, e chegando até a primeira metade do século XX, desenvolvendo a análise e síntese sobre a produção com a temática marinha na Bahia. Para tanto, utilizam-se documentos pertencentes ao Arquivo Histórico da EBA/UFBA, periódicos das bibliotecas e acervos públicos. Fontes primárias, jornais da época e entrevistas foram analisados, contextualizando sua produção artística e estabelecendo relações com a época, identificando elementos comuns à sua contemporaneidade.

On this research, it is proposed to systematically study the artistic work of Manoel Ignácio de Mendonça Filho, pausing in seascape painting and its understanding through his education and interaction with the interests of the time, as well as his performance at Bahia’s School of Fine Arts and its consequences for the renewal of art teaching in this institution. So, it analyzes, formal and historically Mendonça Filho’s marine paintings, as well as it’s observed the artist’s management at the “EBA” guidance, emphasizing his valuation policy and improvement of the arts education. Are adopted the historic, comparative, deductive and regressive methods of Bloch, coming back to the seventeenth century, when the marine painting appears unrelated, as an independent reason, and coming to the first half of the twentieth century, developing the analysis and synthesis about the production with the marine thematic in Bahia. Therefore, are used documents belonging to the historical archive of “EBA/UFBA”, periodicals from libraries and public collections. Primary sources, newspapers from those times and interviews were analyzed, contextualizing the artistic production and establishing the relations with the time, identifying common elements with the contemporaneity.
