Abstract

The present study consists of a translation with commentary of the short story The Detachable Appendage (1991), by the Canadian writer and poet Beth Goobie. The translation was elaborated following Luise von Flotow's (1991) three practical categories of feminist translation, namely supplementing, prefacing and footnoting, and hijacking. The purpose is to observe their applicability in order to offer reflections that could contribute to the wide field of Translation Studies. The analyses were based on a theoretical framework developed from the alliance between two branches of the Translation field, the feminist and the German functionalist translation theory , including names such as Sherry Simon (1996), Barbara Godard (1990), Christiane Nord (2006/2016), among others. Eight samples were chosen from the short story to be commented on in this research. It was noted, after detailed examinations and discussions about the translation process, that the research was successful in fulfilling the purpose of constructing a feminist translation from the source text, along with its justifications for translation choices that had been established.
