Abstract: | Esse estudo tem como objetivo analisar a interferência do dinheiro na formação do par
amoroso em alguns textos dos dois primeiros livros de contos de Machado de Assis, Contos
fluminenses e Histórias da meia-noite. O olhar machadiano, do período inicial, já contrastava
ao olhar romântico de seus contemporâneos, o que era uma antecipação do que ocorreria na
sua obra madura. Analisamos os contos Miss Dollar, Luís Soares e Ernesto de Tal (escritos
entre 1870 e 1873) em confrontamento com outras produções do autor e produções da mesma
época. Tem-se como centro o casamento na sociedade oitocentista, assim como a importância
que ele tem na vida de homens e mulheres, ricos, pobres e “remediados” desse período. Como
pano de fundo, mudanças que estavam ocorrendo na sociedade brasileira: a diminuição do
poder patriarcal dentro do corpo social e da família; modificação na forma de escolha do
cônjuge; a mudança das relações no casamento; o convívio entre a forma escravocrata e a
modernidade burguesa; as novas posturas femininas diante do casamento – ainda que
condicionadas pelas pressões sociais e culturais; a cultura da leitura do romance e suas
implicações nos costumes urbanos. Com isso, confrontamos aspectos de sociedades que
possuíam classe burguesa bem definida, como a Inglaterra, e a brasileira. Também são
enfatizadas mudanças no comportamento. The objective of this study analyzes the interference of money in the formation of the loving relationship in some texts of the first two story books by Machado de Assis – Contos fluminenses e Histórias da meia-noite. Since his initial period, Machado’s critical view contrasted with the look of his romantic contemporaries. His initial stories were already anticipation what would occur in his mature work. Analyzing the short stories Miss Dollar, Luís Soares and Ernesto de Tal (written between 1870 and 1873) in a confrontation with others productions of the author and the other productions of the same age. It has been as focus marriage in nineteenth-century society, even as the importance of marriage had in the life of women and men, rich, poor and “remedied” people. As background, the changes that were taken place in Brazilian society: the decrease of the patriarchal power in society; the modification in the way of choose the spouse; the changes of relationships in marriage; the conviviality between the slave society and the bourgeois modernity; the new female attitude in face of marriage obligation – even though subordinate the social and cultural pressures; the reading culture of the novel and its implication in urban environment. Thereby, we confronted aspects o societies that had bourgeoisie well defined – as in England – and Brazilian society. Also, it is evidenced social behavioral changes. |
