The Sistema Viário do Oeste (SVO), whose main project is the construction of the Salvador-Ilha de Itaparica bridge, consists of an intervention in Bahia’s road system that aims to interconnect the main state and federal highways that are connected to the capital of Bahia. The project is expected to create a new logistical and urban vector for the Metropolitan Region of Salvador (RMS) and rebalance the urban growth dynamics of the metropolis, by shifting its center of gravity towards the municipalities of Itaparica and Vera Cruz and the Recôncavo and Baixo Sul territories. The goal of this paper is precisely to discuss the potential of the SVO to meet such expectations. To achieve the proposed objective, we discuss the relationship between infrastructure and economic development as well as the socioeconomics situation of the municipalities within the macro of influence of the project and the stylized facts about commuting.
