A laboriosa classe caixeiral: relações de trabalho e associativismo no comércio de Salvador (1875-1889)

Abstract

O objetivo desta dissertação é fazer uma análise das relações e condições de trabalho dependente mantida entre caixeiros e empregadores na cidade de Salvador entre 1875 e 1889. Além disso, visa apontar como associativismo caixeiral foi importante por organizar esses trabalhadores, forjar uma identidade de ofício, prover auxílios e, na medida em que o contexto permitia, se insinuar pela garantia de direitos. Argumenta-se, portanto, que embora as relações de trabalho fossem permeadas por práticas paternalistas e as associações de caixeiros mantivessem estreitos laços clientelistas com empregadores e outros setores das elites soteropolitanas, é possível perceber a agência política desses trabalhadores na defesa ou garantia de seus interesses.

The objective of this dissertation is to make an analysis of the relations and conditions of dependent work maintained between clerks and employers in the city of Salvador between 1875 and 1889. In addition, it aims to point out how collective associations have been important for organizing these workers, forging an identity of office, providing aid and , to the extent that the context allowed, to insinuate itself by the guarantee of rights. It is argued, therefore, that although labor relations were permeated by paternalistic practices and the associations of clerks maintained close clientelistic ties with employers and other sectors of the soteropolitan elites, it is possible to perceive the political agency of these workers in the defense or guarantee of their interests.
