TRADUZINDO MAYA ANGELOU: POESIA E ATIVISMO POLÍTICO NEGRO-FEMINISTA

Abstract

A tradução e a análise da poesia e do ativismo político negro-feminista de Maya Angelou vêm a atender as novas demandas de tradução de textos afrodiaspóricos no Brasil, ao buscar respeitar, por exemplo, as marcas culturais e identitárias impressas no trabalho da autora. Nesse sentido, esse trabalho tem a finalidade de, genealogicamente, situar Maya Angelou na história da poesia e do ativismo afro-americano e realizar a tradução de alguns poemas da autora, presentes na obra Just Give me a Cool Drink of Water „Fore I Diiie, seu primeiro livro de poemas publicado em 1971. A princípio, tais objetivos foram organizados levando em consideração os dados sobre o início da poesia afro-americana nos Estados Unidos, em paralelo ao ativismo político dos afro-americanos. Em seguida, houve a problematização acerca da existência da poesia afro-americana, desde o seu surgimento até a chegada dos autores mais recentes, período onde Angelou está inserida. Por fim, foi feita uma discussão sobre o cenário da tradução de textos negros no Brasil e a tradução de cinco poemas de Maya Angelou. Essas três partes do trabalho foram embasadas por teóricos como Jerry W. Ward Jr. (1997), Toni Martin (1976), Jeffrey B. Ferguson (2008), Leda Martins (2003), Louis Gates (1990), Cuti (2002), Denise Carrascosa (2017), Ana Lúcia Souza (2011), Stuart Hall (1996), Gayatri Spivak (2010), Raquel de Souza (2017), Hampaté Bâ (2010) e Lawrence Venuti (2002). Tais autores, de maneira suplementar, têm possibilitado teorizar sobre as questões relativas às temáticas trazidas ao longo do trabalho, de modo a favorecerem a criação de novas ideias e discussões para a tradução literária de textos afrodiaspóricos no Brasil. As perspectivas advindas dessas reflexões ganharam forma, sobretudo, na parte das traduções, a partir da emersão das análises críticas dos poemas traduzidos, ao buscar pôr as culturas afro-brasileira e afro-americana em diálogo, considerando tanto os aspectos estéticos dos poemas, como a sua visualidade e sonoridade, quanto os seus aspectos políticos, históricos e identitários.

The translation and analysis of Maya Angelou's poetry and black feminist political activism seek to attend the new demands of Afro-diasporic texts in Brazil, trying to respect, for example, the cultural and identity marks printed on the author's work. Thus, this work aims to genealogically situate Maya Angelou in the history of Afro-American poetry and activism such as to translate some poems from her first book of poems, entitled Just Give me a Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Diiie, published in 1971. At first these goals were organized considering the data on the beginning of African-American poetry in the United States, in parallel to the African-Americans political activism. Then there was the problematization about the existence of African American poetry, from its immersion until the arrival of the most recent authors, period where Angelou is inserted. Finally, there was a discussion on the scenario of the translation of black texts in Brazil and the translation of five poems by Maya Angelou. These three parts of the work were based on theories by Jerry W. Ward Jr. (1997), Toni Martin (1976), Jeffrey B. Ferguson (2008), Leda Martins (2003), Louis Gates (1990), Cuti (2002), Denise Carrascosa (2017), Ana Lúcia Souza (2011), Stuart Hall (1996), Gayatri Spivak (2010), Raquel de Souza (2017), Hampaté Bâ (2010) and Lawrence Venuti (2002). These authors, supplementarily, have made it possible to theorize about the issues related to the themes brought throughout the work, in order to favor the creation of new ideas and discussions for the literary translation of afrodiasporic texts in Brazil. The perspectives arising from these reflections have taken shape, especially in the part of the translations, as of immersion of the critical analysis of the translated poems. Such analyzes have sought to put the Afro-Brazilian and Afro-American cultures into dialogue, considering both the aesthetic aspects of the poems, its visuality and sonority, as well as its political, historical and identity aspects.
