This dissertation focuses on the case occurred in the village of Camamú, Ilhéus's county, between the years 1840 and 1842, in which the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of the Assumption undertook an attempt to benefit embargo against the vicar Celestino Euzébio da Assunção. The brotherhoods claimed as a reason for this action the fact that the priest was the son of freed slaves. The incident raised questions on the part of those involved in the process about citizenship grantet to the freedmen and the authority of the Catholic Church at the beginning of the Second Empire. |
