Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the evolution of the land structure and the behavior of economic and social development indicators in the northern and northwestern regions of Rio de Janeiro. Furthermore, it sought to determine whether land distribution is an important variable in explaining the differences in the level of economic development of municipalities. The results show that, in the regions in question, differences in land structure alone cannot explain the differences in the level of economic and social development. Population size, in turn, proved to be an important variable in this process, which may be associated with greater consumption potential, which attracts the private sector, as well as political power, due to the size of the electorate, which influences the allocation of public investments.
