John Madden. Shakespeare Apaixonado. Intertextualidade. Marc Norman. Tom Stoppard. |
Abstract: | This monography aims to analyze the screenplay and the film Shakespeare In Love (1988) directed by John Madden and written by Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman, under the context of intertextuality. The romantic comedy, based on William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet (1597), engages in dialogues with other Shakespeare’s works, bringing the own bard as the main character. The quoted texts allud and exemplify the adaptation process Robert Stam mentions, where the film – the hypertext – embodies and also changes many hypotexts that will contribute to its structure, as well as Genette Kristeva’s theoretical basis about intertextuality. Keywords: William Shakespeare. John Madden. Shakespeare In Love. Intertextuality. Marc Norman. Tom Stoppard. |
