A RESSIGNIFICAÇÃO DA PERSONAGEM CIRCE NA OBRA DE MADELINE MILLER ATRAVÉS DA MITOLOGIA REVISIONISTA

Abstract

In Homer, Circe is a female character who plays a supporting role in the main narrative of The Odyssey. Just another chapter in the story of the hero Odysseus. In Hesiod, she is set during Theogony through her family and love relationships. And this is repeated in several other texts of classical literature – the goddess, the daughter, the sister, the lover, the mother, the wife, the sorceress. However, Madeline Miller (2019) resignifies the character with the contemporary work Circe, in which the homonymous character is the protagonist of her own story. In this work, she is not fragmented through facets, on the contrary, all the nuances, characteristics and acts are explored to give greater perception to the reader to know who Circe is and what motivates her actions. Therefore, the objective of this work is to analyze the character within the context of the contemporary work, as well as through the classic texts The Odyssey, The Theogony, The Telegony, The Argonautica, The Aeneid, The Metamorphoses and Fabulae. This research is carried out based on the myth of Circe in Classical Antiquity, on the importance of literature for the maintenance of myths, and on the permanence of the myth of Circe in contemporary times present in the work of Madeline Miller. For this, it has the methodological support of authors such as Burkert (1991), Andrade (2003), Martins (2005), Rich (1972) and Ostriker (1982). Thus, contributing to the discussion and reflection on the female character, such as the concept of myth, the social place of women, the return of classic narratives in contemporary times, re-vision and revisionist mythmaking, respectively.
