REVOLTA DAS INTERNAS NO RECOLHIMENTO DO SANTO NOME DE JESUS: UMA EDIÇÃO SEMIDIPLOMÁTICA

Abstract

From the perspective of paleographic, philological and linguistic studies, this monograph seeks to disseminate the edition of a Letter denouncing the inmates of the Gathering of the Holy Name of Jesus, written in Bahia, dated from the 19th century. The manuscript document belongs to the collection of Santa Casa de Misericórdia of Bahia, allocated in the Colonial and Provincial Archives Section no 5285 and shows aspects of the historical-social context of the time, as well as information about the reality lived in the gathering. Since the colonial period, women were requested from the Portuguese Crown authorities, explaining the reasons for the requests. The purpose was to educate white girls from families of wealthy families, to welcome poor orphans, to protect the dignity of maidens and widows of families. as well as to enclose and punish women who behaved as inappropriate during the period. The document selected helps in understanding the cultural practices of the time, including those that kept women locked up under close surveillance at the request of parents and husbands. In the present study, the research based on philology through a semidiplomatic edition, allowed a systematic analysis of the manuscript source and its context, expanding the knowledge about writing, customs and other aspects related to welfare institutions and society of the time, noting, in particular, the power relations that affected women, and the proper behavior demanded by those responsible for the administration of the recollection, which led to a riot called the “Revolt of the Gathered”. Complements the edition, a brief glossary, which aims to assist both researchers and scholars on the subject, as well as the general public in the knowledge of the language of the time.
