A outra face da medalha: memória e invisibilidade de grupos sociais na coleção de medalhas do Museu Eugênio Teixeira Leal em Salvador – Bahia

Abstract

Esta pesquisa analisa a representação de grupos sociais – mulheres, afrodescendentes, indígenas e trabalhadores – na produção medalhística brasileira, principalmente nas medalhas produzidas pelas instituições governamentais, a nível federal, municipal e estadual, considerando a forma, as abordagens e o contexto histórico e sociopolítico em que tais representações estão inseridas, tendo como referência o acervo do Museu Eugênio Teixeira Leal, localizado em Salvador, Bahia. Para o adequado desenvolvimento do tema estudado, são apresentadas noções da numismática e da medalhística nacionais e a sua relação com a Museologia. Fontes e dados complementares foram confrontados com as medalhas identificadas no museu, proporcionando uma maior confiabilidade estatística aos resultados obtidos. A seguir, foi analisada como a expografia de tais medalhas é realizada na instituição museal e as dificuldades, que também ocorrem nos demais museus numismáticos, para a exibição de suas peças, considerando, ainda, os aspectos comunicacionais. Para uma melhor compreensão de como o processo de invisibilidade dos grupos sociais acima referidos se concretiza, procurou-se compreender as relações entre Memória, individual e coletiva, os poderes instituídos e as formas de manipulação ideológica das imagens de personagens representadas nas medalhas, que promovem a legitimação ou dissimulação das mesmas.

This research analyzes the representation of social groups - women, Afro-descendants, indigenous people and workers - in Brazilian medal production, mainly in medals produced by governmental institutions, at the federal, municipal and state levels, considering the form, the approaches and the historical and socio-political context where such representations are inserted, having as reference the collection of the Eugênio Teixeira Leal Museum, located in Salvador, Bahia. For the proper development of the studied theme, notions of national numismatics and medals are presented and their relationship with Museology. Additional sources and data were compared with the medals identified in the museum, providing greater statistical reliability to the results obtained. Next, it was analyzed how the exhibition of such medals is carried out at the museum and the difficulties, which also occur in other numismatic museums, for the exhibition of their pieces, also considering the communicational aspects. For a better understanding of how the invisibility process of the social groups mentioned above materializes, we sought to understand the relationships between individual and collective Memory, the powers that be and the forms of ideological manipulation of the images of characters represented in the medals, which promote their legitimation or concealment.
