"E o senhor te porá por cabeça e não por cauda": a participação evangélica na política baiana 1986-2002

Abstract

Durante a primeira metade do século XX, grupos evangélicos estiveram aparentemente distantes da vida política. Mas no começo dos anos 80, em muitas cidades do Brasil, eles decidiram se envolver no espaço público mais intensamente. O presente estudo analisa a participação evangélica no espaço legislativo, privilegiando a atuação de políticos batistas, e iurdianos na Câmara Municipal de Salvador, Assembleia Legislativa da Bahia e Câmara dos Deputados entre os anos de 1986 a 2002. A tese defendida é de que a entrada destes grupos nos espaços legislativos citados tinha como objetivo defender os interesses de suas igrejas de origem, dando ao mesmo tempo visibilidade às disputas existentes no campo religioso.

During the first half of the twentieth century, Evangelicals groups were apparently distant of the political life. But, in the beginning of the 80’s, in many cities of Brazil, they decided if they will involve in the public space more intensely. This study analyzes the evangelical participation in the legislative space, privileging the performance of politicians Baptists, Assemblies and Iurdians in the City Council of Salvador, Legislative Assembly of Bahia and Chamber of Deputies between the years of 1986 and 2002. The thesis defended is that the entry of these groups into the legislative spaces cited was intended to defend the interests of their churches, while giving visibility to disputes in the religious field.
