Ressignificando Bob Marley: um estudo sobre a tradução de metáforas

Abstract

Conforme se observa na epígrafe deste trabalho, os estudos contemporâneos da tradução já não se limitam mais à função instrumental comunicativa da área, ao ato de se fazer entender em uma língua alvo um texto codificado em dada língua fonte. Mais que isso, a tradução é abordada como uma tomada de decisão política através da linguagem. O tradutor, por sua vez, é um sujeito autônomo, que se posiciona política, histórica e culturalmente, tanto no ato de interpretação do texto/cultura de partida, quanto no ato de (re)criação desse texto na cultura de chegada. No processo de leitura e (re)criação, esse tradutor/autor deixa alguns traços do seu percurso, que revelam pistas diversas a respeito das suas ideologias, crenças, filosofia de vida e visão de mundo. É esse material que, quando colocado em relação à versão tida como final do texto, nos permite ter melhor compreensão do texto/cultura dito de partida e de chegada, bem como do lugar do tradutor/autor no processo de tradução (re)criação do novo texto como um todo. Isso posto, no presente trabalho, objetivo compreender como se configuram as ideologias de Bob Marley no processo tradutório das metáforas em suas canções, quando traduzidas para a língua portuguesa por estudantes de Língua Inglesa da Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA). Para tanto, lanço mão do material produzido por esses estudantes durante o processo de tradução das canções, a partir da gravação dos depoimentos dos tradutores e do registro da digitação online no aplicativo Google Documents. A análise desse material se dá a partir dos pressupostos teóricos-metodológicos da Crítica Genética (SALLES, 2002), da Linguística Cognitiva (LAKOFF e JOHNSON, 1980) e dos estudos da Tradução (BASSNETT e GENTZLER, 2001).

According to the epigraph of this work, contemporary studies on translation are no longer restricted to the instrumental and communicative functions of such field, or to the act of making a text encoded in a source language understood in the target one. Translation is more than that. It is a political approach that involves linguistic options. So, the translator is an autonomous agent who politically, historically and culturally positions himself or herself by interpreting the source text/culture when he/she (re)creates such text in the target culture. In the process of reading and (re)creation, the translator/author leaves some traces behind which demonstrate his/her ways of thinking, together with his beliefs, ideologies, life philosophy and world conception. It is this material that, once it is compared and contrasted with the so called final version of the text, gives us a better understanding of the source text/culture, as well as of the target one. Moreover, it is also important to consider the role of the translator/author in the process of translation (re)creation of this text as a whole. Having all these elements in mind, this work aims at interpreting Bob Marley’s ideologies presented in some of these songs and reflected on the translational process of the metaphors used in such songs, which are translated into Portuguese by students of English from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). Thus, I have analyzed materials produced by these students during the process of translation of these songs; the record of their comments are on the Google Documents app. The analysis of the collected material is based on the theoretical studies of Genetic Criticism (SALLES, 2002), Cognitive Linguistic (LAKOFF e JOHNSON, 1980) and Translation Studies (BASSNETT e GENTZLER, 2001).
