Representações sociais sobre ruralidades e crenças sobre língua inglesa

Abstract

Houve um tempo em que falar a língua inglesa era um bem cultural que poucos se preocupavam em acessar. Hoje, no entanto, o domínio dessa língua se constitui um meio de empoderamento para a pessoa exercer bem seu direito à cidadania global que o mundo contemporâneo requer. Conhecendo as dificuldades que professores e alunos ainda enfrentam e ciente de que as desigualdades em espaços sociais diferentes impossibilitam a realização dessa importante tarefa, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo principal explorar o conceito de representações sociais e verificar se há relação entre as representações sobre rural/ruralidades construídas por alunos de uma escola no campo e suas crenças sobre aprendizagem de língua inglesa na escola no espaço rural. Os conceitos de Representações Sociais foram oferecidos por Moscovici (2015), Jodelet (1992; 2001) e Abric (2000), entre outros. Quanto ao estudo de crenças é em grande parte fornecido por Barcelos (95; 2004; 2007). Para discutir os termos rural e ruralidade buscamos nomes da Sociologia Rural como Halfacree (1993), Moreira e Gaviria (2005), e Carneiro (2005, 2012). E uma vez que ruralidades e Representações estão associadas às identidades, recorremos a Hall (214) e Bauman (2000) para abordar a questão. Alguns teóricos que enriquecem a discussão sobre língua são autores da Linguística Aplicada como Jenkins (2007), Moita Lopes (2008), Rajagopalan (2001), Siqueira (2012), e Scheyerl (2012). A pesquisa envolveu 09 alunos de uma escola num distrito em área rural, onde a coleta de dados foi realizada através de aplicação de questionário, entrevista semiestruturada e etnografia da sala de aula. Os resultados da pesquisa revelaram que as crenças sobre a aprendizagem da língua inglesa pelos alunos estão relacionadas a duas tendências de representar o rural/ruralidades.

There was a time when speaking an English language was a cultural asset that few people bothered to access. Today, however, the mastery of this language constitutes a means of empowerment for a person to exercise his or her right to global citizenship. Aware of the difficulties that teachers and students still face, and knowing that inequalities in different social spaces might preclude such achievement , the present research has as its main objective to explore the concept of Social Representations and verify if there is a relationship between the representations of rural/ruralities built by students of a school located in a rural area and their beliefs about learning the English language in the school in the rural space. The concepts of Social Representations are offered by Moscovici (2006), Jodelet (1992; 2001) and Abric (2000), among others. As for the study on beliefs, it is for the most part provided by Barcelos (95; 2004; 2007). In order to understand the terms rural and rurality we sought names from Rural Sociology, such as Halfacree (1993), Moreira and Gaviria (2005), and Carneiro (2005, 2012). And since ruralities are both associated with identities, we drew upon Hall (2014) and Bauman (2000) to address the issue. Some theorists that enrich the discussion about language are Jenkins (2007), Moita Lopes (2008), Rajagopalan (2001), Siqueira (2012), and Scheyerl (2012). The survey involved 9 students from a school in a rural district, where data collection was performed through application of a questionnaire, a semi-structured interview and classroom ethnography. The results of the research revealed that the beliefs about English learning are related to two tendencies of representing rural/rurality.
