Abstract:
Work analogous to slavery or contemporary slave labor has been found in recent times in the countryside and in the city in several states of the country. The state of Bahia is no exception. In the 56 actions that took place from 2003 to 2011 in the state, carried out by the Special Mobile Inspection Group (GEFM), 2,869 workers were rescued from conditions analogous to slavery in rural areas, mostly in charcoal production and cotton farming. The rescues took place, for the most part, in the west of the state, where Bahia's agribusiness thrives. In this context, it is questioned whether these properties are fulfilling their social function, a characteristic already defended in the Brazilian Constitution, in article 170 which deals with the General Principles of Economic Activity and addresses the social function of property.
