Abstract:
This research aimed to clarify, by musicological and archaeological means, several questions related to prehistoric artifacts, named as flutes or whistles, located in Brazil. Since detailed research on this topic has not been carried out previously in either of the two areas in Brazil, due to the lack of knowledge of musicological tools or to the lack of criticism in archaeological analysis, it forced us to review in depth the scarce national literature available. The literature review included authors who went through similar experiences with similar artifacts, allowing us to follow suggestions for carrying out measurements, possible acoustic reconstructions, discussing nomenclatures in which, at different times, guided us towards a greater clarification of the data we obtained in the field research to finally attest (or discard) the name on a case-by-case basis for those artifacts considered to be aerophones at the Xingó Archaeological Museum.
