O cinema em Salvador: estudo organizacional sobre distribuição e exibição de cinema em Salvador, Bahia, Brasil, no período de 1950-1959

Abstract

A indústria do cinema é composta pelo tripé: produção, distribuição e exibição. Esta tese trata de distribuição e exibição de cinema. O objetivo geral é compreender a distribuição e a exibição de cinema, em Salvador, Bahia, no período de 1950 a 1959, e os objetivos específicos são descrever a distribuição, descrever a exibição, e interpretar a distribuição e a exibição de cinema, em Salvador, no período de 1950 a 1959. Para cumprimento desses objetivos: construiu-se uma abordagem histórica interpretativa de distribuição e exibição de cinema como fenômeno organizacional; e realizou-se um estudo histórico-organizacional com o uso de um modelo aberto e flexível de pesquisa qualitativa. As fontes pesquisadas foram: periódicos, registros de empresas e outros documentos sobre cinema pertencentes a acervos de organizações e indivíduos; e pessoas envolvidas com produção, distribuição e exibição de cinema em Salvador. A análise dos dados coletados nessas fontes resultou nas descrições de distribuição e exibição de cinema em Salvador, nos anos de 1950 a 1959. Na descrição da distribuição de cinema, evidenciaram-se: as distribuidoras. Na descrição da exibição de cinema, evidenciaram-se: o intelectual Walter da Silveira; o cronista Hamilton Correia; o cineasta Glauber Rocha; as salas de cinema; o empreendedor Francisco Pithon; o Clube de Cinema da Bahia (CCB); e outras organizações relacionadas. A análise dessas descrições resultou na interpretação da distribuição e exibição de cinema, em Salvador, nos anos de 1950 a 1959 sob dois temas emergentes: o distribuidor e o exibidor no mercado de cinema em Salvador na década de 1950; e o intelectual, o empreendedor e o cronista na exibição de cinema em Salvador na década de 1950. Sob o foco do distribuidor e do exibidor no mercado de cinema constatouse: a concentração do mercado distribuidor gerando um domínio sobre a exibição, provocado pela falta de legislação brasileira sobre o tripé do cinema; a atuação do distribuidor enceslão Verde durante a década de 1950. Iniciando em 1946, como um simples representante comercial e chegando ao final do ano de 1959, como representante da maioria das produtoras de filmes. Sob o foco do intelectual, do empreendedor e do cronista na exibição de cinema constatou-se: a intelectualidade de Walter da Silveira, que ao divulgar o cinema de arte, por meio do Clube de Cinema da Bahia, moldou toda uma geração; o empreendedorismo de Francisco Pithon, que revolucionou o setor de exibição; e a presença do cronista Hamilton Correia, que além de ter testemunhado as mudanças ocorridas no setor de cinema, as deixou registradas para as próximas gerações. O que em síntese se compreendeu é que a distribuição e a exibição de cinema, em Salvador, no período de 1950 a 1959, foram fundamentais para o cinema como indústria e arte.

The film industry consists of the tripod: production, distribution and exhibition. This thesis deals with cinema distribution and exhibition. The general objective is to understand the distribution and exhibition of cinema, in Salvador, Bahia, from 1950 to 1959, and the specific objectives are to describe the distribution, describe the exhibition, and to interpret the distribution and exhibition of cinema, in Salvador, from 1950 to 1959. To fulfill these objectives: a historical interpretative approach to the distribution and exhibition of cinema was constructed as an organizational phenomenon; and a historical-organizational study was carried out using an open and flexible model of qualitative research. The sources researched were: periodicals, company records and other documents on the cinema of collections of organizations and individuals; and individuals involved in the production, distribution and exhibition of cinema in Salvador. The analysis of the data collected from these sources resulted in descriptions of cinema distribution and exhibition in Salvador, from the years 1950 to 1959. In the description of the cinema distribution, the following were highlighted: the distributors. In the description of the cinema exhibition, the following were highlighted: the intellectual Walter da Silveira; the chronicler Hamilton Correia; filmmaker Glauber Rocha; movie theaters; the entrepreneur Francisco Pithon; the Bahia Film Club (CCB); and other organizations. The analysis of these descriptions resulted in the interpretation of cinema distribution and exhibition, in Salvador, in the years 1950 to 1959 under two emerging themes: the distributor and the exhibitor in the cinema market in Salvador in the 1950s; and the intellectual, the entrepreneur and the chronicler in the cinema exhibition in Salvador in the 1950s. Under the focus of the distributor and the exhibitor in the cinema market it was found: the concentration of the distributor market generating a dominance over the exhibition, provoked by the lack of Brazilian legislation on the cinema tripod; the performance of the distributor Wenceslão Verde during the 1950s. Beginning in 1946, as a simple commercial representative and arriving at the end of 1959, as representative of most film producers. Under the focus of the intellectual, the entrepreneur and the chronicler in the cinema exhibition, it was verified: the intellectuality of Walter da Silveira, who, when promoting art cinema, through the Clube de Cinema da Bahia, shaped an entire generation; Francisco Pithon´s entrepreneurship, which revolutionized the exhibition sector; and the presence of the chronicler Hamilton Correia, who, in addition to having witnessed the changes in the cinema sector, left them registered for the next generations. In summary, it was understood that the distribution and exhibition of cinema in Salvador, from 1950 to 1959, were fundamental for cinema as an industry and art.
