Um “sobrevivente da República dos Palmares” no Congresso Nacional: a questão racial no discurso do deputado federal Abdias Nascimento (1983-1987)

Abstract

This dissertation investigates the work of federal deputy Abdias Nascimento in the National Congress between 1983 and 1987. The study aims to analyze the speeches made by Abdias Nascimento in the plenary sessions of the Chamber of Deputies and the National Congress between 1983 and 1987. The research carries out a critical bibliographical review of the field of studies on Abdias Nascimento. It also aims to identify how the congressman addresses the issue of race in his speeches and mobilizes the claims, denunciations, values, myths and symbols related to his racial identity. The work is based on the theoretical-methodological procedures of Discourse Analysis (DA) and archive ethnography. The oral communications given during the mandate of deputy Abdias Nascimento are used as the primary source of data. The public pronouncements made from the rostrum were selected, totaling 64 speeches given in the plenary sessions of the Chamber of Deputies and in the joint sessions of the National Congress, during the 47th legislature (1983-1987). The results of the research include the identification of key themes such as international politics and pan-Africanist solidarity, policies of memory and symbolic-affective value, affirmative action policies and policies of black representation, participation and mobilization.
