Palácio do Paranaguá – Ilhéus / Bahia : proposta de conservação e restauro

Abstract

For the restoration of a cultural monument, it is crucial to consider the built environment in which it is embedded. This broad approach isn't just restricted to the building itself. Based on this understanding, the present work aims to carry out a restoration project of the Paranaguá Palace and the definition of guidelines for the eventual realization of a requalification project of the José Joaquim Seabra Square, where it is located, seeking to rescue its importance in the landscape of the city. Both the Palace and the Square are located in the city of Ilhéus, on the south coast of Bahia, and were built in the early twentieth century. Given the complexity of the work, we sought to analyze several issues related to the restoration project of the Palace, including an accurate reading and documentation of the building, from the physical, architectural and historical point of view, as well as the realization of an accurate diagnosis of its state of conservation. These studies were the basis for the entire restoration project of the building for the installation of the Museum of the Captaincy of Ilhéus, as well as the basis for the proposition of guidelines for the requalification of its surrounding square, as already mentioned. In developing this project, we used as parameters the search for the recomposition of the building in the landscape, employing contemporary techniques and materials. It is important to emphasize that we seek to avoid the creation of a 'false history', while ensuring, at the same time, the authenticity and timeliness of the intervention.
