| dc.description.abstract | The objective of this article is to analyze the demand for natural gas in Brazilian industry from the perspective of energy substitution. Natural gas is a form of energy with multiple uses, low emissions of polluting gases, and can be used to replace other forms of energy. Currently, the country is experiencing problems related to electricity supply, a fact exacerbated by the scarcity of rainfall throughout the country. This structural situation has led the federal government to use thermoelectric plants for electricity generation. However, the operation of thermoelectric plants, which run on natural gas, could compromise the supply of natural gas to industries. Therefore, this paper will estimate the price elasticity of demand for natural gas in the industrial sector and, thus, determine the effect that price changes have on gas consumption, as well as the respective effects that the price of natural gas substitutes has on natural gas demand. The results indicate that gas consumption behaves inversely to its price, while only diesel oil is a crude substitute for natural gas | pt_BR |

| dc.description.resumo | O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a demanda por gás natural na indústria brasileira, sob a ótica da substituição energética. O gás natural é uma forma de energia com múltiplos usos, baixa emissão de gases poluentes e pode ser utilizado em substituição a outras formas de energia. Atualmente o país vem passando por problemas ligados a oferta de energia elétrica, fato que se faz presente pela escassez de chuvas em território nacional. Esse cenário estrutural levou o governo federal a utilizar as usinas termelétricas para geração de eletricidade. No entanto, a operação das termelétricas, a base de gás natural, poderá comprometer a oferta de gás natural nas indústrias. Desse modo, este trabalho irá estimar a elasticidade preço-demanda de gás natural para o setor industrial e, assim, verificar o efeito que uma variação no preço exerce sobre o consumo de gás, bem como os respectivos efeitos que o preço dos substitutos do gás natural exerce sobre a demanda por gás natural. Os resultados indicam que o consumo gás assume comportamento inverso em relação ao preço do mesmo, enquanto que somente o óleo diesel é substituto bruto do gás natural | pt_BR |
