A tradução verbivocovisual da música " The greatest show on earth", da Banda Hightwish

Abstract

Literary theorists such as W alter Benjamin (2010) and Haroldo de Campos (1977) say that translating poetry is prioritizing aesthetic elements of the text instead of semantics. To achieve this purpose, Campos creates the verbivocovisual translation theory , which, in the tradition of the concrete poetry , tries to recreate the semantic, sonic and visual elements of the source text in the translated text. This paper is based on the guidelines of the verbivocovisual translation to create an intersemiotic commented translation from the lyrics of “The Greatest Show On Earth”, by the Finnish band Nightwish, into a poem in Brazilian Portuguese. To apply Campos' method, Paulo Henriques Britto’s (2002) methodology for the objective translation of poetry is used. Since this is the translation of song lyrics, the priority was the rhythmic and phonetic elements. The paper also aims to recreate prosodic characteristics of the live song in the translated poem. The version of the song “The Greatest Show On Earth” that was used was the live version in T ampere, Finland, in 2015. Then, we discuss the results and main guiding aspects of the translation, which are based on the “voco”, “visual” and “verbi” modalities, respectively , along with the main difficulties faced during the process. From this order of priorities, the discussion approaches the main difficulties faced during the process. In this sense, the research contributes with a methodology and structure for intersemiotic translations, more specifically from music to poetry , and also opens other experiments as future possibilities for this and other transcreation projects, such as a way of translating the visual elements of the live presentation into concrete poetry .
