De sobrado a terreiro: a construção de um candomblé na Salvador oitocentista

Abstract

O texto apresenta a análise e interpretação dos objetos e espaços usados por um culto afro-brasileiro no centro histórico de Salvador entre o último quartel do século XIX e a década de 1920. O trabalho introduz o contexto social e o ambiente físico do bairro, e demonstra que algumas partes do centro da cidade reuniam condições minimamente favoráveis para a implantação de um culto de inspiração africana. A partir de analogias etnográficas com fontes no presente (especialistas religiosos vinculados a cinco terreiros) e no passado (etnografias na Bahia e África), o trabalho de pesquisa permitiu reconhecer que o porão de um sobrado na Rua do Tijolo serviu como terreiro de candomblé e, ainda, que houve influências ritualísticas inspiradas em práticas originárias da África centro-ocidental e da região do Golfo do Benim.

This thesis presents the analysis and interpretation of artifacts and layout of an afroBrazilian space of worship that existed in Salvador’s historic downtown, beginning in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and ending definitely before the end of the 1920’s. The study introduces the social context and the physical layout of the neighborhood, demonstrating that some parts of the downtown presented minimally favorable conditions for the implementation of an African- inspired cult. Through the use of ethnographic analogies with present- day (religious specialists from five different candomblés) and past sources (ethnographies in Bahia and Africa), this study identified the basement of a house on Tijolo Street as the setting for a candomblé terreiro with ritual influences inspired by practices originating in WestCentral and the Golf of Benim regions of Africa.
