A família Pessôa, o prestígio e a tradição: encenações e práticas oligárquicas na Paraíba (1889-1942)

Abstract

A presente tese tem por objetivo compreender como a família Pessôa construiu e defendeu um prestígio político, associado a construção de uma tradição familiar, alimentada historicamente enquanto uma estratégia de manutenção do status quo, constituídos como aspectos integrantes da configuração do poder político da família na Paraíba entre 1889 e 1942. Esse objeto de estudo foi sendo delineado a partir de uma série de preocupações oriundas da interpretação das fontes e da literatura que fundamentou a pesquisa. Assim, tracei o meu percurso a partir de duas ordens de questões. Na primeira, tento entender a criação e a defesa do prestígio enquanto aspecto fundamental para a configuração do poder político familiar. Na segunda ordem de questões, procuro perceber, paralelamente a criação e defesa do prestígio, de que maneira os Pessôa foram inventando uma tradição familiar enquanto uma estratégia para manutenção do status quo no curso do tempo. Para respondê-las, duas hipóteses se apresentam como centrais ao longo da tese. De um lado, defendo que em paralelo a produção da vida material, do aparato econômico e da parentela, a criação e a defesa desse prestígio – entendido enquanto sinônimo de status –, atravessado pela recorrência de um complexo jogo de cena, fundamentou e assegurou a eficácia do poderio político e influência da família Pessôa na Paraíba durante a temporalidade estudada. Por outro lado, defendo que na criação e defesa desse prestígio, os Pessôa acabaram por inventar uma tradição familiar, reivindicada pelos seus próprios promotores de acordo com a expectativa de manutenção do poder político no momento em que este apresentou sinais de declínio. No último caso, penso que inventar uma tradição familiar foi uma estratégia da família para manutenção do patrimônio imaterial – o prestígio – dos Pessôa. Essas hipóteses se interconectam historicamente ao longo do recorte temporal delineado e apoiam-se na premissa de que as posições sociais assumidas pelos personagens que analiso não estiveram desconectadas das suas atividades políticas, econômicas e culturais, isto é, separadas do campo das práticas e representações, dos gestos e comportamentos, da realidade e da sua apreensão imaginária.

This thesis aims to understand how the Pessôa family built and defended a political prestige, associated with the construction of a family tradition, historically fed as a strategy for maintaining the status quo, constituted as integral aspects of the configuration of family political power in Paraíba between 1889 and 1942. This object of study was drawn from a series of concerns arising from the interpretation of the sources and the literature that founded the research. I have thus drawn my course from two sets of questions. In the first one, I try to understand the creation and defense of prestige as a fundamental aspect for the configuration of family political power. In the second order of questions, I try to perceive, parallel to the creation and defense of prestige, how the Pessôa were inventing a family tradition as a strategy for maintaining the status quo in the course of time. To answer them, two hypotheses are central to the thesis. On the one hand, I argue that in parallel to the production of material life, the economic apparatus and the kinship, the creation and defense of this prestige - understood as a synonym of status -, crossed by the recurrence of a complex game of scene, founded and effectiveness of the political power and influence of the family Pessôa in Paraíba during the studied temporality. On the other hand, I defend that in the creation and defense of this prestige, the Pessôa eventually invented a family tradition, claimed by its own promoters according to the expectation of maintaining political power at the time when it showed signs of decline. In the latter case, I think that inventing a family tradition was a family strategy for maintaining the immaterial heritage - the prestige - of the Pessôa. These hypotheses are interconnected historically throughout the time frame outlined and are based on the premise that the social positions assumed by the characters I analyze have not been disconnected from their political, economic and cultural activities, that is to say, separated from the field of practices and representations, of gestures and behaviors, of reality and of their imaginary apprehension.
