Expressões leigas da fé católica: irmandades religiosas na freguesia de Santana em Salvador (1876-1926)

Abstract

The religious brotherhood, as institutions that were linked to social life of the most part of the individuals of the Brazilian society until the XIX century, had a fundamental relevance to understand part of the social history of Brazil. This dissertation have as an objective the study of a significant part of the social structure imbricated into the religious lay life in the city of Salvador, through the brotherhoods of the Santana’s district between the years of 1876 and 1926, analyzing how the social changes that happened in the end of the XIX century and begin of XX century impacted these institutions. Besides that, it is intend to perceive the traits of sociability into these associations, and the process of permanence and ruptures that surrounds them and analyze the most important associative links of its members. For this purpose, were analyzed deafferents historical sources such as newspapers and periodicals, “compromissos”, reports, letters issued by the archdiocese for those associations, accounting documents and the current legislation during the period studied.
