For over 100 years, the federal technical schools went through several changes, which resulted in the current Institutos Federais de Educação Tecnológica (Federal Institutes for Technological Education). Covering all the levels and modalities of professional education, these new institutes must establish a close engagement with the full development of the citizen worker, combining technical, social, and critical knowledges. One of the modalities covered in these Institutes is a mixture of secondary and professional school. This new educational modality opens new perspectives for the secondary school, through the combination of natural sciences, humanities, vocational, and technological teaching. Based on theoretical assumptions of Applied Linguistics and with the help of other referentials, originated from education, public policies, and teaching methods for foreign language learning, this work aims to draw a critical overview of English teaching for the technical integrated modality at the Federal Institute for Technological Education located in the city of Salvador, Brazil. In order to do that, we analyze teachers’ perspectives about teaching and learning foreign languages, relating them to what is recommended in official documents for teaching those languages in high schools in Brazil, with the intention of strengthening a critical and humanist teaching. This whole scenario is intended to provide students, in addition to their insertion in the labor market, their critical development by learning a foreign language. Also considering that teachers must take responsibility for raising questions about what they teach, how they should teach it and what are the goals for which they are teaching a language, this work, by analyzing data obtained through the participation of teachers, notes a gap between what these professionals really want, their expectations towards teaching of English and their real practices. Therefore, after analyzing the data, suggestions built in conjunction with the participants of this research are presented, aiming to provide English instruction covering all language skills, as well as the students' critical and reflective learning. |
