Pilar do comunismo ou um escritor exótico? estudo descritivo das traduções polonesas da obra de Jorge Amado

Abstract

As traduções da obra de Jorge Amado começam a ser publicadas na Polônia, a partir do ano de 1949, período em que o país vive a ditadura stalinista. A censura admite somente produções culturais comprometidas com o realismo socialista. Jorge Amado é traduzido junto aos autores que simpatizam com o comunismo. O escritor brasileiro exerce um grande impacto sobre o sistema sociopolítico polonês. O momento da introdução do autor brasileiro no sistema literário polonês coincide com o período do exílio de Amado na Europa. Até o ano de 1993 são traduzidas, editadas e reeditadas, dezessete obras de Amado: onze no período do realismo socialista, e seis nos tempos de maior abertura do sistema político. Amado tem na Polônia vinte edições até o ano de 1957, e seis edições em todo o período posterior. O estudo das traduções vai além da problemática meramente lingüística. A pesquisa analisa a dialética dos condicionamentos nos quais começa e se desenvolve o intercâmbio entre os dois sistemas culturais: o brasileiro e o polonês, operado por meio da obra traduzida de Jorge Amado. A tese responde a pergunta sobre a função da obra de Jorge Amado no sistema literário polonês, sugerindo dois papeis possíveis: o papel de um pilar do comunismo e o papel de uma literatura exótica.

The publication of the Polish translations of the Brazilian novelist Jorge Amado’s works takes place in Poland during the period of Stalin’s dictatorship. Censorship at that period allowed only for cultural production committed with the socialist realism. Jorge Amado is translated together with other foreign writers who sympathise with communism. This way, the Brazilian writer exerts great influence on the Polish socio-political system. The moment Amado was introduced into the Polish literary system coincides with his exile in Europe. Up to the year 1993, seventeen works of Jorge Amado were translated, published and republished in Poland – from which eleven during the period of socialist realism and six during the political opening in the remaining years. Up to 1957, Amado’s works reach up to twenty editions, and six editions in the following period. The study of the translations of Jorge Amado’s works goes beyond linguistic boundaries. The present research investigates the conditioning process where the exchange between two systems of cultures, the Brazilian and the Polish one, starts and develops, through the translations of Jorge Amado. This investigation answers the question about the role of Amado’s literature in the Polish literary system by suggesting two possible views: Amado as a pillar of communism and as an exotic writer.
