Dubar is thesis aims to analyse the construction of the professional identity of prison officers, considered from the social, organisational and personal dynamics that impact and construct the meaning of this work, the idea of who is the prisoner and the feeling of vulnerability or power that appears in the work interactions in the prison context. This study was carried out in a prison unit in Salvador-Bahia with prison staff in different phases of their professional career. There were used three categories of analysis; interviews, questionnaires applied to the last contest held in the State in 2014 with analysis based on the Data Based Theory. These categories were identified as interconnected dimensions that make possible the un- derstanding of what characterises the performance and relationships established along the professional career of the staff. In what concerns prisons and prison officers, there are spe- cific characteristics lived in this context, which build a peculiar culture and make it necessary for those who live in prison to assimilate the current relational dynamics, especially because it is their own integrity (physical, moral, emotional) as well as the safety of the prison unit and of those who are there, which is at stake.A position formerly held by people with a socioeconomic reality that slightly differs from that of the prisoners, has increasingly been occupied by professionals with other backgrounds and cultural contexts. It was identified that the existence of another professional identity adds to these subjects a subjective pro- tection to their role, which protects them, especially with outside the prison relationships, as it gives them the opportunity not to affirm belonging to this professional category, despite the physical vulnerability still prevailing and within the prison this position enhances the separation from the prisoners. The police perspective that permeates public security is also present among prison agents, who have sought mechanisms to exercise power by minimi- sing relational issues and prioritising their own security. Changes in the work places of the agents and the configuration of the new prisons have also contributed to new configurations in the relationship between agents and prisoners, currently marked by a greater distance. However, it is verified that, although the agents with other backgrounds try not to approach the inmates, there are relational, attitudinal aspects related to this professional occupation that inevitably need to be assimilated to the intramural work and, to some extent, begin to be part of the life experience of these subjects also outside the walls. Thus, we also highlight aspects related to how the learning of this position occurs in its relational condition. The analyses carried out on the senses, feelings, ideas, strategies and paths lived by these pro- fessionals have resonated with the studies of the sociology of punishment such as Garland and Wacquant, from the sociology of prisons such as Kauffman, Ramalho, Moraes, and Crawley, which interfaces from the sociology of prisons to that of the emotions, as well as authors of the sociology of labor, such as Dubar |
