As espécies
estudadas dentro desse contexto.
do indivíduo.
do território.
The indirect influence that predators exert on the prey is within a study area called the ecology of fear. This influence make behavioral changes, due to the fear of predation, in prey species. The risk of predation may be variable, since there are factors that influence the predatory behavior of the animals, especially in the escape. Territorialist species, where individuals have to deal with complex trade-offs, have been little studied within this context. We used the Flight Initiation Distance (FID, distance at which a predator gets close to the prey before it escapes) to indicate the individual's level of fear. We investigated whether the FID of the damselfish, Stegastes fuscus, would be influenced by the size of the territory, structural complexity of the environment, life stage and number of agonistic interactions. We also evaluate the influence of complexity on the number of agonistic interactions and the size of the territory of the individual. And we compared the size of the territory and the number of agonistic interactions between young and adults. Complexity negatively influenced FID, and was the only variable that obtained a significant result. Significant differences were observed in the mean values of the size of the territory and in the number of agonistic interactions when compared between young and adults. Our study, besides corroborating with the hypothesis of the influence of complexity on the FID, suggests that for the species studied, the complexity of the territory of the individual is more important than the size of the territory. It is worth to note the importance of understanding which variables influence predator behavior, since this behavior may not only influence the predator-prey relationship, but may also generate cascade effects, influencing the entire structure of communities and even ecosystems. |
