Abstract: | Esta dissertação analisou a variação das orações relativas no português popular do interior do
A metodologia deste
sócio-história do PB.
[+humano], o antecedente definido e a preposição lexical.
This Master's thesis analysed the variation of relative clauses in Bahia’s heartland’s popular Portuguese backed by the theoretical basis of Variationist Linguistics (LABOV, 2008). It also examined the hypothesis of irregular linguistic transmission (BAXTER; LUCCHESI, 2009); the hypothesis of the sociolinguistic polarization of Brazilian Portuguese (LUCCHESI, 2015a); and the premise of Accessibility Hierarchy (KEENAM; COMRIE, 1977). The methodology of this work, which also lies in the contribution of the Variationist Linguistics (LABOV, 2008), consists in an analysis of the aforementioned phenomena from a vernacular speaking sample collected in the cities of Poções and Santo Antônio de Jesus, in the state of Bahia, from speakers with little to no schooling. This sample functions as a representation of the so-called Bahia’s heartland’s popular Portuguese. Forty-eight sociolinguistic interviews were analysed. They took place in the aforementioned cities and were sorted out according to the Projeto Vertentes categorization of urban and rural zones. The variable linguistic phenomenon analysed here consists in the usage of one of the three relativization strategies established by the literature in Linguistics (the standard strategy; the chopping strategy; and the resumptive pronoun strategy), with the addition of the neutral relative-making element (LUCCHESI, 2015c). The initial hypothesis is that the contact between languages present in the socio-history of Brazilian Portuguese caused a morphological simplification that, in relation to the relativization process, favored the predominance of the chopping strategy over the other ones, as it can be seen in Ribeiro’s (2009) study. Besides, it is sought to observe if there is difference between Bahia’s heartland’s popular Portuguese and the Afro-Brazilian Portuguese studied by Lucchesi (2015c) in relation to the use of pre-positioned relativemaking elements. This may reveal one more effect of the contact between languages in the actual configuration of Brazilian Portuguese. It is also sought to verify the continuum of the linguistic levelling that attenuated the sociolinguistic polarization of communities closer to the urban centers. After the collection and the codification of the occurrences of relative clauses from the analysed corpus, it can be seen that the chopping strategy prevails in Bahia’s heartland’s popular Portuguese. The standard strategy occurs only with the relative pronoun “onde” (where), and even so, with low frequency of occurrence. The data show that relative clauses with prepositions are no longer part of the grammar of the popular Portuguese spoken in Bahia’s heartland. Except for “onde”, relative clauses are initiated with the neutral relativemaking “que” (that) as a result of the morphological simplification present in the history of Brazilian Portuguese. The resumptive pronoun strategy also has low frequency of occurrence; it is favored by the presence of linguistic variables such as the explicative relative clause, the [+human] antecedent, the defined antecedent, and the lexical preposition. The analysis of social variables disclosed a stable variation across the analysed communities in relation to the strategies of relativization. The same happened with the opposition between the relative clauses connected to prepositional positions and the relative clauses positioned in the subject, and direct object syntactic functions. Nonetheless, the comparison between the Afro-Brazilian Portuguese and Bahia’s heartland’s popular Portuguese has shown an increase of relative clauses connected to prepositional syntactic functions in the latter, what confirms a continuum of the linguistic levelling that differentiates more isolated communities from those closer to urban centers. This levelling not only weakened the sociolinguistic polarization of Brazilian Portuguese, thus differentiating more isolated communities from those more influenced by the urban linguistic patterns, but also attenuated the more drastic signs of irregular linguistic transmission that affected the varieties of Brazilian popular Portuguese in the past (LUCCHESI, 2015a). |
