“O romancista está livre, o biógrafo amarrado”: Virginia Woolf e a biografia

Abstract

A biografia tem tido cada vez mais destaque nos debates críticos contemporâneos, marcados, entre outras coisas, pelo rompimento cada vez maior das fronteiras que separam os gêneros textuais e literários, por novos estatutos estéticos e por diferentes concepções de subjetividade e identidade. Diante disto, escolhi como recorte deste trabalho a crítica do gênero biografia feita pela escritora Virginia Woolf em seus dois principais ensaios sobre o tema, e a relação do pensamento articulado em tais ensaios com o que ela realizou em Orlando, livro que tem “uma biografia” como subtítulo. Para tal, faço considerações sobre o gênero biográfico, analiso os referidos ensaios - The new biography e A arte da biografia – e a relação do pensamento da escritora no tocante ao campo no qual estava inserida. Em seguida, apresento algumas críticas contemporâneas do pensamento de Woolf sobre a biografia, analisando, por fim, Orlando. Tal análise é feita em virtude dos pontos tratados nos capítulos anteriores, tais como: a repercussão das produções de Lytton Strachey e Harold Nicolson na obra, a mistura de autobiografia com biografia e ficção, e as quebras de paradigmas não só epistemológicos ou artísticos, mas também de subjetividade, identidade, gênero e sexualidade.

Biography has been very discussed in the contemporary critical studies, a moment characterized, among other things, by an increasing rapture of borders that separate the textual and literary genres, by new aesthetics statutes, and by different conceptions of subjectivity and identity. In this context, we selected as research theme the reviews of the genre biography made by the writer Virginia Woolf in her two main essays on the theme, and the relation between the ideas articulated in these essays and Orlando, a book that has “a biography” as subtitle. To do this, we make considerations on the genre biography and an analysis of the referred essays, The new biography and The art of biography, and the relation between Woolf’s ideas on the topic and the literary field in which she produced her work. Finally, we expose some contemporary reviews of Woolf’s thoughts on biography and analyze Orlando. This analysis is related to the questions discussed in the other two chapters, such as: the repercussion of Lytton Strachey’s and Harold Nicolson’s books on Orlando; the mixture of autobiography, biography, and fiction; and the rapture of paradigms that are not only artistic or epistemological, but also involve subjectivity, identity, sexuality, and gender.
