Uma história da relatividade restrita e cubismo: circulação de ideias na transição dos séculos XIX e XX.

Abstract

A transição do final do século XIX para o início do século XX foi marcada por profundas mudanças na Ciência e na Arte. Tanto a relatividade restrita quanto o cubismo foram frutos de uma mesma época, e estavam imersas às mesmas circulações de ideias de tal período. A relatividade e o cubismo são, portanto, ápices de movimentos que provocaram rupturas de visões de mundo até então dominantes – um rompimento com o mundo clássico. De um lado, o cubismo surgiu com novos conceitos de representação no espaço pictórico. Foi um movimento artístico de vanguarda que surgiu em Paris na primeira década do século XX e que teve como um dos principais expoentes nas artes plásticas o espanhol Pablo Picasso. De outro, a teoria da relatividade restrita, proposta por Albert Einstein, surgiu modificando conceitos que perduravam por mais de 200 anos mantidos pela mecânica clássica e nos ofereceu uma nova forma de ver o mundo. Iremos discutir o modo pelo qual os ambientes culturais e intelectuais da transição do século XIX para o XX influenciaram tanto a relatividade restrita quanto o cubismo na construção de novas noções de espaço e tempo.

ABSTRACT The transition from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century was marked by profound changes in science and art. Both special relativity and cubism were fruits of the same time, and were immersed in the same circulations of ideas of such a period. Relativity and cubism are, therefore, apexes of movements that have provoked ruptures of previously dominant worldviews – a break with the classical world. On the one hand, Cubism arose with new concepts of representation in the pictorial space. It was an artistic movement that emerged in Paris in the first decade of the twentieth century and its main exponents was the Spanish Pablo Picasso. On the other hand, the theory of special relativity proposed by Albert Einstein changed concepts that lasted for more than 200 years maintained by classical mechanics and offered us a new way of seeing the world. We will discuss how the cultural and intellectual environments of the transition from the nineteenth century to the twentieth influenced both special relativity and cubism in the construction of new notions of space and time.
