Omeros-Walcott: outrização produtiva uma poética semi-utópica dos encontros culturais

Abstract

Trata-se de uma análise do livro-poema Omeros, do poeta caribenho Derek Walcott, como exemplar de uma outrização produtiva – conceito-atitude que serve de contraponto ao processo pejorativo e hierarquizante de outrização e silenciamento do subalterno colonial. Com a postura metodológica do campo dos estudos culturais pós-coloniais problematizam-se, dentre outros aspectos, as noções de cânone e de déficit cultural, as dicotomias centro/periferia e civilizado/primitivo, especialmente no contexto caribenho, bem como o papel do inglês como língua de poder e como língua literária, em um contexto mundial. Parte da recepção crítica de Omeros no Brasil também é analisada visando a consolidar a delimitação de outrização produtiva e a tentar oferecer uma maior visibilidade a essa poética caribenha no cenário acadêmico brasileiro.

This study attempts to analyze the poem-book Omeros, by Caribbean poet Derek Walcott, as a paradigm of productive othering – an attitude-concept which serves to counter the pejorative and hierarchizing process of othering and silencing of the colonial subaltern. With the methodological posture of the field of post-colonial cultural studies, this work aims at problematizing, among others, the notions of canon and cultural deficit, the dicotomies center/periphery and civilized/primitive, especially within the Caribbean context, as well as the role of English as the ‘international’ language of power and of literature. Part of the critical reception of Omeros in Brazil is also analysed in order to consolidate the theoretical delimitation of productive othering, while seeking to offer greater visibility to this Caribbean poetics in the Brazilian academic scenery.
