Aspectos culturais na tradução de Tenda dos Milagres

Abstract

O presente trabalho é produto da pesquisa que se propôs a analisar a tradução dos itens lexicais referentes a aspectos da cultura popular baiana presentes no romance Tenda dos Milagres, de Jorge Amado, publicado nos Estados Unidos, em 1969, para a língua inglesa, assinada por Barbara Shelby Merello e publicada nos Estados Unidos, em 1971. A análise das estratégias tradutórias se deu a partir do cotejo entre o texto de partida e sua tradução, com base nos conceitos de Domesticação e Estrangeirização, cunhados por Lawrence Venuti. A pesquisa buscou, também, analisar as relações sociopolíticas e culturais entre Brasil e Estados Unidos desde a década de 1930 até o início da década de 1970, quando a tradução foi publicada, além de investigar de que forma essas relações podem ter influenciado as escolhas práticas e metodológicas da tradutora. Verificou-se que, embora os textos estrangeiros traduzidos e publicados nos Estados Unidos tradicionalmente sigam tendências domesticantes, a tradução de Tenda dos Milagres assinada por Merello faz uso frequente de ambos os mecanismos – estrangeirização e domesticação –, indicando, pois, não haver grande preponderância de uma estratégia sobre a outra. Para fundamentar as discussões teóricas, a pesquisa se valeu também da Teoria dos Polissistemas, desenvolvida por Itamar Even-Zohar, dos conceitos de Reescritura e Patronagem, elaborados por André Léfevère e das noções de Rastro, Différance e Suplemento, discutidas por Jacques Derrida.

This work is the result of a research that aimed to analyze the translation of the lexical items related to the aspects of the popular culture from Bahia presented in the novel Tenda dos Milagres, by Jorge Amado, published in the United States, in 1969, into the English language, performed by Barbara Shelby Merello and published in the United States, in 1971. The analysis of the translation strategies was carried out from the collation between the source-text and its translation, based on the concepts of Domestication and Foreignization, coined by Lawrence Venuti. This research also sought to analyze the cultural and sociopolitical relations between Brazil and the United States from the 1930’s to the beginning of the 1970’s, when the translation was published, as well as investigate how such relation could have influenced the translator’s practical and methodological choices. Although the foreign texts translated and published in the United States traditionally follow domesticating trends, it was found that the translation of Tenda dos Milagres performed by Merello frequently uses both devices – foreignization and domestication –, thereby evincing that there is no wide prevalence of one strategy over the other. In order to ground the theoretical discussion, this research also made use of the Polysystem Theory, developed by Itamar Even-Zohar, as well as the concepts of Rewriting and Patronage, formulated by André Lefevere and the notions of Trace, Différance and Supplement, discussed by Jacques Derrida.
