Grafite: uma etnografia dos produtores da escrita urbana de salvador

Abstract

Tradicionalmente, os estudos sobre a História da Cultura Escrita eram voltados para o âmbito institucional e privilegiavam quase exclusivamente a prática ortodoxa da escrita, de modo que outras manifestações do escrito em sociedade não eram submetidas à pesquisa. Os resquícios dessa postura, atravessada por desigualdades raciais e sociais, ainda ressoam em nosso tempo. Por isso, este trabalho segue uma outra direção, aliado ao conceito de história vista de baixo (SHARPE, 1992), que busca expandir os objetos historiográficos, no intuito de examinar práticas tradicionalmente subalternizadas, como é o caso do grafite. Através de uma perspectiva sócio-histórica, observam-se os usos da escrita distante de instâncias oficiais de normatização. O presente estudo se realizou através da perspectiva etnográfica; a estratégia metodológica permitiu a observação participante e entrevistas individuais com os grafiteiros e grafiteiras da cidade. A partir da imersão no “universo” do grafite soteropolitano, foi possível analisar os usos sociais que tal prática tem para aqueles que a realizam, o que permitiu evidenciar as disputas pelo espaço público, e compreender o uso da escrita distante de instâncias oficiais de normatização e do espaço da escolarização. Apresenta-se, nesse sentido, a descrição de códigos e categorias inerentes à prática do grafite: siglas de vinculação aos grupos, estilos das letras e características do grafite soteropolitano. A contextualização do grafite em Salvador possibilitou compreender algumas trajetórias de grafiteiros e grafiteiras na cidade, bem como a transformação por quais passaram as escritas urbanas. Esse conjunto de resultados permite reconhecer a diversidade de sujeitos que participam dessa manifestação cultural e possibilita identificar como as escritas urbanas circulam na cidade.

Traditionally the studies on the History of Written Culture have focused primarily on institutional settings and have also almost exclusively concentrated on orthodox writing practices, in such a way as to ignore, as research topics, other manifestations of writing practices in society. Remnants of this stance, marked also by a particular position on racial and social inequality, are still at play nowadays. This work aims at following a different direction, taking seriously the idea of a “history from below” (SHARPE, 1992) and from there attempting to enhance the objects of research in the field of the History of Written Culture by way of an examination of a practice of writing traditionally taken as “minor”, the graffiti. Thus, through a social-historical perspective, some uses of writing apart from official institutions of regulation are observed, and the study herein presented takes advantage of an ethnographical perspective that, as a methodological strategy, allowed for participant observation and individual interviews with graffiti artists, of both genders, from the city of Salvador, Bahia. From the immersion in the universe of graffiti in Salvador it was possible to describe the social uses such a practice has for those who perform it – which has allowed the highlighting of the disputation for the public space –, as well as to understand the uses of writing removed from official stances of regulation and the space of schooling. We then present a description of codes and characteristics related to the practice of graffiti: acronyms and crew emblems, styles of lettering and general characteristics of the graffiti produced in Salvador. The contextualization of graffiti in Salvador has allowed us to understand some life trajectories of graffiti writers in the city, as well as the transformations local urban writing has gone through. Those results also allow us to recognize the diversity of subjects that take part in this cultural manifestation, as well as making it possible to identify the way urban writings circulate in the city.
