Resumo:
The aim of this study is to evaluate the spatial dependence of the evolution of the Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI) in Brazilian northeast, between 2000 and 2010, seeking to identify patterns of clusters of high and low growth, and thus verify if the evolution of this indicator is subject to spatial interaction. Furthermore, it was analyzed the occurrence of convergence at municipal level, i.e., if municipalities with lower values of MHDI in 2000 had a higher growth rate than those with higher values for the same year. Initially, it was performed an Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis to verify the hypothesis of global spatial randomness of evolution of the MHDI. In a second moment, spatialeconometric models were estimated and showed that there was a process of β convergence of the MHDI and that part of the growth rate of this index between 2000 and 2010 was explained by the variables of urban welfare.
