Resumo:
This thesis reflects my fascination with studying the old houses in the city of Feira de Santana, Bahia, built in the mid-20th century. In addition to the sentiment, this work aims to analyze the residential architecture in the city and the contribution of a civil engineer, José Joaquim Lopes de Brito (J. de Brito), who recorded a significant number of projects between 1937 and 1960, decades of greatest urban and economic
development in the city. It is an attempt to tell a story that fills a gap in the architectural historiography of the country, which is largely focused on the Southeast region. Some actions include: bibliographical research in local periodicals; reading the main national and local authors who have discussed the subject; J. de Brito's small bibliography compared with family accounts, informal conversations with contemporary figures of
the engineer and articles in local newspapers and magazines; visits to existing residences and interpretation of photos of these residences; The reading of architectural projects and the collection of data, mainly from the Municipal Public Archives of Feira de Santana (APMFS), helped to construct a narrative on the subject, which resulted in the creation of a spreadsheet, the generation of graphs and tables,
in addition to the creation of maps to outline an overview of the residential architecture of the period under study. The work sought to analyze the production of residential architecture by J. de Brito and also by some of his contemporaries in the city of Feira de Santana, with an emphasis on the quantity and quality of the projects, relating them to historical facts, highlighting the set of his extensive production, his projects for
popular housing, the facades and the remaining houses. The amount of projects was divided into phases for typological analysis, not forgetting their subjective aspects, with the perspective of elucidating this residential architecture of Feira de Santana, the importance and contribution of the aforementioned engineer within the historical context.
