Resumo:
Developed as part of the Professional Master‟s Degree in Conservation and Restoration of Historic Monuments and Sites (MP-Cecre), this study sought to requalify the building known as Prédio do Capespe, in the city of Penedo, Alagoas. On the banks of the River São Francisco and an integral part of the listed historic centre of the century-old city of Penedo, the two-storey townhouse, which originated in the mid-19th century, has survived the passage of time through reuse for different purposes, the last of which was as the headquarters of the now defunct Penedo Hunting and Fishing Club (Capespe). An in-depth analysis of the building, its materiality and its physical and chemical interactions with the environment in which it is located generated a comprehensive diagnosis and damage map. The project aims to remedy and mitigate discontinuities identified as pathologies and gaps in the historic building and the proposal for a new annex volume to replace the existing ones, in order to preserve the historic building without damaging its materiality, its historical and cultural value and its image. The proposal seeks to bring the historic building back to the present day, integrating it into its surroundings and the landscape of which it is a constituent part and bringing back its direct relationship with the bed of the River São Francisco, so important for its permanence and the uses it once housed, while respecting the concepts and premises of contemporary restoration. As a new use, a Reference Centre for Scientific Research on the Lower São Francisco is proposed, capable of providing support for the development of scientific research and a venue for exhibitions of its results, as well as for artistic and educational activities about the Lower São Francisco (the stretch of the river on the border between the states of Alagoas and Sergipe).
