Leukemia is defined as a type of cancer that affects the initial cells located inside the bone
marrow, having occupational exposure to pesticides and other agents as an important risk factor.
In turn, rural work, an important occupation in the state of Bahia, makes intensive use of
pesticides and other agents, exposing workers in this category to diseases and injuries, including
Leukemia. Thus, this study aims to investigate the association between rural work and leukemia
in Social Security insured persons, from 2014 to 2018. This is a case-control study based on the
registration of social security benefits (sickness allowance), which covered the entire
geographic area of the state of Bahia, considering the total number of cases. All cases of
leukemia were selected, including all subcategories in individuals who received the social
security benefit of sick pay from January 2014 to December 2018. The results showed a positive
association between rural work and the onset of Leukemia (OR= 2.80), residents of the Central
North mesoregion of the state of Bahia (OR= 2.0), aged ≥56 years (OR=5.16). This finding
corroborates the literature that already widely discusses the relationship between occupation as
a rural worker and the involvement of lymphohematopoietic cancers. This study showed a
positive association between Leukemia and rural work, especially in the Central North, Central
South, Northeast, and South mesoregions and in the age group from 45 years old. The Salvador
mesoregion was the one with the lowest risk for becoming ill with Leukemia

La leucemia se define como un tipo de cáncer que afecta a las células iniciales situadas en el
interior de la médula ósea, teniendo como importante factor de riesgo la exposición laboral a
pesticidas y otros agentes. A su vez, el trabajo rural, ocupación importante en el estado de Bahía,
hace uso intensivo de pesticidas y otros agentes, exponiendo a los trabajadores de esa categoría
a enfermedades y lesiones, incluso la leucemia. Así, este estudio tiene como objetivo investigar
la asociación entre trabajo rural y leucemia en asegurados de la Seguridad Social, de 2014 a
2018. Se trata de un estudio de casos y controles basado en el registro de las prestaciones de la
seguridad social (subsidio por enfermedad), que abarcó toda la geografía del estado de Bahía,
considerando el número total de casos. Se seleccionaron todos los casos de leucemia,
incluyendo todas las subcategorías en individuos que recibieron el beneficio de seguridad social
de subsidio por enfermedad de enero de 2014 a diciembre de 2018. Los resultados mostraron
una asociación positiva entre el trabajo rural y la aparición de leucemia (OR= 2.80), residentes
de la mesorregión Centro Norte del estado de Bahía (OR= 2,0), edad ≥ 56 años (OR=5,16). Este
hallazgo corrobora la literatura que ya discute ampliamente la relación entre la ocupación como
trabajador rural y la participación de cánceres linfohematopoyéticos. Este estudio mostró una
asociación positiva entre la Leucemia y el trabajo rural, especialmente en las mesorregiones
Centro Norte, Centro Sur, Nordeste y Sur y en el grupo etario a partir de 45 años. La
mesorregión de Salvador fue la de menor riesgo de enfermar de Leucemia.
