Resumo:
The present work aims to examine the notion of tolerance as presented in the classic text of political philosophy: Letter on Toleration by John Locke. Published in 1689, the work reflects the historical, political and religious circumstances that motivated the philosopher to develop a conception that establishes the philosophical foundations of political- religious liberalism. In this sense, what is proposed in this study is to explain Locke's conception of tolerance as an articulating principle and, at the same time, limiting the role of individuals, the State and religious institutions for the establishment and maintenance of social peace, respect freedom of worship and respect for different beliefs.
