Resumo:
This research regards the possible convergences between art, design, and cultural identity,
under the interior design perspective. A contemporary frame was used for the investigations,
encompassing the era of mobile devices, new technologies, fragmented identities, and fluid
boundaries. The research general objective was to present a reflection on the concept of
cultural identity in postmodernity, relating it to the universe of art and design in order to
demonstrate the importance of the fluidity of cultural identities in the construction of the
interior design project. The research were to present a literature review in the fields of art and
design, as well as in the social and philosophical concept in which the question of cultural
identity is currently found, focusing on contemporaneity, and also on the fluid thinking of the
boundaries between both areas, as well as the convergences between art and design. The
research further discusses how cultural identity is seen today, and how it is portrayed in the
interior design project. The dissertation further presents and reflects on the work of three
different interior designers, all of which are under a contemporary condition of convergence
between art and design, peripheral roots, and relevant action in the midst of a globalized and
multicultural universe. The dialectic methodological approach was chosen, allowing the
understanding and reflection on the object of study in its contemporary dynamics and
complexity. The analysis and synthesis method was used, consisting on decrypting interior
design through its component elements. The methodology further encompasses the
comparative methods approach through comparing interior design projects to design objects,
and art installations. An autobiographical methodology was also used through considering the
research author’s experiences related to interior design practice, comprising the identity and
narrative aspects of each production. As a result, the dissertation points out to the presence of
art in contemporary interior design in a formative way. It is comprised in the creative process
of the designer living within a modern liquid and globalized reality, who reaches the memory
for references that come from the identity and can, in turn, influence the identity.
