Resumo:
This monograph has as the object of study the worker strike of 1949, at the São Carlos plant, located in the city of Santo Amaro, Bahia. These workers integrate a broader group of workers who in the post-World War II period, in the Dutra and Mangabeira government, feeling the financial difficulties and lack of effectiveness of labor rights used the strike as one of the instruments for their claims. The strike in question ends in front of the police station, with a balance of two workers killed and others injured while asking for the release of comrades also involved with the strike movement who were detained by the local police. One of the main arguments used by the police authorities to legitimize the repression was that the movement meant an affront to the order and which was clearly architected and directed by communist elements. Analyzing some news produced by Bahian newspapers, it is noticed that this speech was mainly reproduced by the media. From an analysis of the newspapers: The Diário de Notícias, The Jornal A Tarde and The Estado de Bahia, it is sought to understand the speeches, omissions and positioning of newspapers in the follow-up of the strike until its outcome.
