Resumo:
In this paper, I make use of a feminist perspective as “the critical lens” to examine previous anthropological works. More specifically, I apply the lens to examine Robert Murphy’s (1956) proposed analysis of the so-called ‘disharmonic system’ found by him to exist among the Mundurucu Indians of Northern Brazil.
Descrição:
Paper submitted to the Department of Anthropology, Boston University in fulfillment of the requirements for credit in the discipline ‘Matrilineal Societies,’ September, 1980. I would like to thank Pamela Sankar for her encouraging comments and help with the English language while I elaborated this paper. Brett Williams not only send me a paper she herself had written on the Mundurucu years before, where she expresses similar views as the ones I expound here regarding ‘sister’s daughter’s marriage’ (Williams 1972), but also suggested I carry this discussion further.
