This broad approach isn't just restricted to the building itself. Based on this understanding, the present work aims to carry out a restoration project of the Paranaguá Palace and the definition of guidelines for the eventual realization of a requalification project of the José Joaquim Seabra Square, where it is located, seeking to rescue its importance in the landscape of the city. Both the Palace and the Square are located in the city of Ilhéus, on the south coast of Bahia, and were built in the early twentieth century. Given the complexity of the work, we sought to analyze several issues related to the restoration project of the Palace, including an accurate reading and documentation of the building, from the physical, architectural and historical point of view, as well as the realization of an accurate diagnosis of its state of conservation. These studies were the basis for the entire restoration project of the building for the installation of the Museum of the Captaincy of Ilhéus, as well as the basis for the proposition of guidelines for the requalification of its surrounding square, as already mentioned. In developing this project, we used as parameters the search for the recomposition of the building in the landscape, employing contemporary techniques and materials. It is important to emphasize that we seek to avoid the creation of a 'false history', while ensuring, at the same time, the authenticity and timeliness of the intervention. It is characterized by being a building from the Colonial period, with architectural influences from the old “chácaras” located on the outskirts of the city, where the large backyards were used for planting. Built at the end of the 18th century, the house's architecture is simple and sparsely decorated, with a large wooded area around it. The house is currently in a process of degradation due to its abandonment and the renovations carried out on the property, which have damaged its remaining features. In this sense, the aim of this work is to propose the restoration of the property, recovering the building's characteristic elements, reflecting the design duality between past and present, with a view to its propagation into the future, proposing a new use with the function of lodging through interventions to expand the use with annexed constructions, which can guarantee the maintenance of the historical and collective memory of this building for the City of Salvador. Located in Vila de Santo Amaro do Sul, the second district of the municipality of General Câmara, this locality features an architectural and urban ensemble protected at the federal level by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN). The project unfolds in the following phases: analysis of the historical and constructive context; diagnosis of the current conservation status of the Casa das Pestanas; and development of an intervention and restoration proposal for the Casa das Pestanas and recommendations for the surroundings of Praça Marechal Câmara, presenting measures aimed at preserving the authenticity of the monument and its distinctive typological characteristics. The absence of this regular concept commonly found in conservation theory obligates the application of invasive techniques which results in loss of materiality authenticity. The subject presented in this paper is the urban loft number 182, located on 14 de Julho street, São Luís, Brazil, traced by Francisco Frias de Mesquita, major engineer of Portuguese Empire in 1615. This paper means to show the application of most recognized methodologies and concepts of restauration science with the support of Cesare Brandi’s theory. This loft is a significant example of 19th Century architectonics with Portuguese-Brazilian characteristics of São Luís city. The restauration and architectonic project mean to regret the current degradation status and adapt the present rooms to a new usage, minimalizing the impacts over its original foundations. The methodoly of this project worked with the following stages: acknowledgement of the Loft number 182, contextualizing this architectonic object in the São Luís urban spacing; phisio-architectonic register; photographic survey; historical research; damage mapping; laboratory and physical environment analysis; diagnosis and proposal of restauration and rehabilitation for institutional use. The proposal presented in this paper integrates the guidelines for the intervention and elaboration of preventive conservation and complementary projects.
