<title>O Movimento negro brasileiro: definições e a dicotomia política versus cultura</title>
<link>https://repositorio.ufba.br/handle/ri/42467</link>
<description>O Movimento negro brasileiro: definições e a dicotomia política versus cultura
Rocha, Sebastião Alves da
The Black Movement plays a fundamental role in understanding how discussions on racial relations have evolved throughout Brazil’s history, both intellectually and ideologically. Studies on this topic in the 20th century reveal two main perspectives. The first, represented by Gilberto Freyre, argues that racial coexistence in Brazil was harmonious. The second, driven by Unesco studies, reinforced the existence of racial issues that had already been denounced by the Brazilian Black Movement, such as the Frente Negra Brasileira, since the 1930s. As the leading force in challenging the ideology of racial democracy, the Black Movement used these studies to strengthen its arguments. Given its central role in combating racism and discrimination against the Black population in the post-abolition period, it is essential to understand the scope and limits of its actions. Thus, this study aims to analyze the definition of the Brazilian Black Movement, exploring the broad and narrow concepts identified by historian Joel Rufino dos Santos (1985), as well as discussing the relationship between culturalism and Black activism in Brazil.

<title>Reconstruções do passado na África Central: interfaces entre linguística, arqueologia e história</title>
<link>https://repositorio.ufba.br/handle/ri/35882</link>
<description>Reconstruções do passado na África Central: interfaces entre linguística, arqueologia e história
Figueiredo, Fábio Baqueiro
Narratives about the history of Central Africa before the colonial period are dominated by what is conventionally called the “Bantu expansion”. However, historians, archaeologists and linguists (the three academic disciplines most involved in the task of reconstructing the remote African past) seem engaged in an endless debate about the nature, duration, scope and internal development of this process -- some authors even doubting that anything that can be named as such has, in fact, happened. Some of the divergences concern the meaning of a given evidence (archaeological, linguistic or historical); others refer to the production of the evidence itself; and still others relate to the broader conceptual frameworks that support conflicting interpretations.

<title>Histórias de tribos: o nacionalismo africano diante da etnicidade</title>

<description>Histórias de tribos: o nacionalismo africano diante da etnicidade
Figueiredo, Fábio Baqueiro
The purpose of this chapter is to present a brief overview of African nationalist discourses on ethnicity and its relation to the task of building a new nation in the former colonial territory. This is neither a census effort nor a definitive assessment of the full empirical spectrum of African nationalism in the independence years; indeed, that does not seem to me to be necessary or even productive for the kind of general analysis that is being sought here.
