This research aims to understand – based on telegrams from the United States Embassy (USA),
received and sent by the State Department between 1961 and 1969, as well as documentation from the
Folha de São Paulo newspaper corresponding to the same period, as well as through bibliographical
research – how the US government, institutionally, behaved regarding the civil-military coup that
occurred in Brazil in 1964. It addresses 20th century Brazil, as well as our interventionist tradition and
the situation before the 1964 coup. It deals with US imperialism and its correlated expansionist policy.
It exposes, based on archival documents, produced mainly in the 20th century, how the deposition of
João Goulart occurred. It explains the concepts of memory, archive, forgetfulness and human rights –
contextualizing them with the collections analyzed. Based on archival theory, this study analyzes
telegrams from the U.S. Embassy received and sent by the State Department between 1961 and 1969,
as well as documents from the Folha de São Paulo newspaper from the same period. It delves deeper
into the concept of human rights archives. This research uses a qualitative approach and uses case
studies as its method. Regarding data collection procedures, this study used bibliographic and
documentary research. The results prove that the U.S. government acted to destabilize and/or
overthrow governments that were not aligned with its own interests, especially in Latin America in the
20th century. It is concluded that 1) the U.S. government, understanding the strategic importance of
Brazil for international geopolitics, institutionally supported the civil-military coup of 1964; and 2)
archival documents, as well as information professionals, especially archivists, are essential for the
development and improvement of a society, as well as for remembering the past and critically
understanding the present.

The preservation and dissemination of memory have increasingly attracted the interest of various fields of knowledge, such as Philosophy, Information Science (IS), Archival Science, History, and Librarianship. However, the subject presents growing challenges, especially due to new issues associated with the production, distribution, and intensive use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the creation, maintenance, and storage of institutional documents. This thesis investigates the systemic mechanisms required to implement processes for the preservation and perpetuation of digital documents in academic institutions, focusing on the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). The main objective of the research is to develop a model capable of integrating theory and practice, employing technological tools and modern governance practices aligned with institutional policies and demands. To conduct the study, an interdisciplinary approach was adopted, exploratory and documental in nature, with an emphasis on qualitative analysis. Data collection was carried out through questionnaires and interviews with agents linked to selected memory units at UFBA. For data analysis, content analysis practices were applied, providing a basis for proposing a model for implementing digital preservation processes based on the findings. The results reveal the current state of digital preservation practices, whether implemented or not, within organizational contexts. This led to the development of a Model for the Implementation of Digital Preservation Persistence (MIP-PD), which incorporates various systems, ranging from document producers to preservation software and dissemination environments, such as Tainacan. The model was structured to promote integration between different systems as a practical alternative to ensure the protection and reliability of UFBA’s digital collections over time. Additionally, it proposes alternatives for building implementation processes through policies, plans, and the inclusion of emerging technologies, such as Generative Artificial Intelligence, to optimize metadata management and document accessibility. It is concluded that digital memory preservation requires continuous and collaborative efforts, combining technological innovation with institutional policies, robust governance processes, and the effective participation of human resources, from senior management to the document-producing staff. Although the MIP-PD has not yet been implemented, it presents potential requirements to be replicated in other institutions and for further studies on the subject, thus contributing to institutional memory preservation and strengthening the democratization of access to information.

This research investigated the information competences of teachers in the Geography Degree Programme at Bahia State University, focusing on the contribution of these competences to the initial training of students in this area of knowledge, taking into account the new information paradigm provided by information and communication technologies, which require new pedagogical-didactic practices that encourage and value student autonomy in face-to-face and distance learning environments, enhance lifelong learning and their active individual and collective participation, and expand the possibilities for building knowledge. The research stems from teaching experience, which led to the formulation of the triggering question: ‘What are the main contributions of teachers’ information competences to initial teacher training that enable innovation in the Geography Degree Programme at Bahia State University? and the hypotheses: the pedagogy that teachers use to develop their teaching activities defines their demand for information and their level of information competences; the organisational culture of the Geography Degree College has a decisive influence on the way information is perceived, received, interpreted and used in teaching activities. To answer the question and confirm the hypotheses, Morin's complexity theory and its concepts were adopted as the central systematic approach. We opted for a qualitative, descriptive, explanatory, analytical-systemic and applied methodology, which used bibliographical and documentary research. It included a semi-structured interview with the teachers, content analysis of the minutes of the Geography Degree Collegiate meetings and information from direct observation of meetings and reading the publications of the same group, carrying out multiple triangulation of all the data collected, which was advantageous because it allowed us to interpret, confirm and get closer to the universe analysed. Complexity Theory conceives the organisational praxis of the collegiate referred to as a dynamic of organisation, disorganisation and permanent reorganisation in the production of-itself, in a retroactive and recursive process. In this sense, the research concludes that the levels of information skills of the collegiate professors are basic, as they do not generate knowledge; the professors find it difficult to identify their information needs. This indicator is associated with the organisational culture that presides over the relationship between the State University of Bahia, its departments and course collegiate bodies; individualism prevails in working with information within the collegiate body, with the circulation and use of information being precarious, the difficulty of dealing collectively with problems that affect the whole collegiate body, the dispersion of teaching and research activities, etc, and recognise the importance of the collegiate body making use of individual teaching potential, but find it difficult to implement this retroactive and recursive process of the production-of-itself; there are difficulties in innovation arising from an organisational praxis focused on responding to the bureaucratic demands of the university, with little time dedicated to reflecting on the collegiate body's own practice. Finally, we propose an Information Competence Model for the Geography Degree programme at the Federal University of Bahia to help acquire specific information competences. The model should be implemented in training courses, since the teachers are interested because they recognise that this training improves their organisational praxis and the teaching and learning of the Geography degree teachers and students.

Information behavior is a relevant topic in Information Science, corresponding to the sum of
actions related to the retrieval of content in information sources and channels. It presents
adherence to quality of life at work due to conditions that encompass aspects that interfere in
the lives of workers, involving working conditions and environments that affect the physical,
psychological and social well-being of people linked to organizational environments that raise
specific informational needs. Considering the announced prerogatives, the thesis aimed to
investigate how the actions developed by the Quality of Life at Work Center interfere with the
informational behavior of the institution's employees aimed at satisfying the needs for
quality-of-life information at work. The specific objectives corresponded to: a) detailing the
information cycle in the Quality of Life at Work actions developed by the Quality of Life at
Work Center; b) map the information channels used by employees in the process of
retrieving information on Quality of Life at Work; c) describe the employee's motivations for
participating in Quality of Life at Work actions; d) identify how information on Quality of Life at
Work is appropriated, after participation in the Quality of Life at Work Program, as well as its
potential effects on the employee and the work environment. The methodological outlines
include the method of procedure (monographic/case study), the level of research
(descriptive) and the techniques and instruments of investigation (documentary research,
interview and questionnaire). The focus group technique provided a better understanding of
the nuances of the reality studied and the employees' perception of the topic from an
informational perspective. It was found that the Program's actions are welfare-based with
little evidence of integrated action to transform the work context. As for information channels,
the results demonstrated that they do not guarantee the effectiveness of information
dissemination. In relation to the employee's motivation to seek information on the topic, it
requires attention when processing information in the context of the University to optimize the
information process and satisfy information needs. Regarding the low adherence of
employees to the actions, in addition to the objective issues found, the results allow us to
infer this occurrence from the subject's perception that the information conveyed does not
enable real changes in the work environment. The results highlighted the collective
understanding that there is an urgent need for discussion involving the entire university
community to build a quality-of-life policy in institutional work, the main subsidy of which is
qualified information. The final considerations show that the informational work of the Center
in the implemented actions does not achieve significant results and does not impact the
informational behavior of employees, given that the Program cannot effectively contribute to
the promotion of quality of life at work at the University, although it achieves some
unmeasured positive results, which is the reason for proposing a method to evaluate the
appropriation of information on quality of life at work. To overcome the likely
theoretical-conceptual gaps, the expectation of future studies regarding the intersections
between information behavior and quality of work life discussed in this thesis was
